- Wadsworth
Library. "Once there were no public libraries in
America. Until the mid-nineteenth century, subscription
libraries, financially supported by members, provided library
services. One of the first free public libraries in the country
was the Geneseo Athenaeum in Geneseo, NY.
In 1842 local landholder James Wadsworth (1768-1844) established
the Athenaeum collection for students at the Livingston County
High School (later Temple Hill Academy). Wadsworth, who had been
advocating for state legislation to establish tax supported
public libraries, opened the Athenaeum collection free of charge
to the residents of Livingston County.
By Civil War times, the collection had outgrown its space and a
new library was constructed at the present location in 1867. In
1869 the New York State legislature established the Wadsworth
Library as a public library in the Village of Geneseo to serve
the residents and schools of Livingston County. Originally
endowed by the Wadsworth family, the Library is also funded by
the Village and Town of Geneseo and the Geneseo Central School
District.
During the early decades of the twentieth century several
attempts were made to expand the library but all were abandoned.
In the 1980s another expansion program was undertaken and
completed. A new addition to the Wadsworth Library was dedicated
March 17, 1996. The Library is included in the Geneseo Historic
District, a National Landmark Village listed by the National
Register of Historic Places in 1991.

- Geneseo
Community Players. "Through the combined efforts of
the Geneseo Rotary Club, the State Teachers College, and the
community, Geneseo Community Players was formed in 1950. The
first play, The Royal Family, was performed in March of that
year. Noon on opening day, the members of Rotary in top hats,
accompanied by the high school band, marched down Main St. to
publicize the event.
For all but two of the following years, Geneseo Community
Players has produced one, two and as many as four full length
productions each year. We are lead by a board of area residents
with varied experience and background who feel a strong
commitment to our community and theater. We are dedicated to
engaging local area talent for all aspects of a production.
In conjunction with Livonia Community Players, we sponsor Gail
Nelli’s Creative Dramatics Workshop for Children each summer.
This workshop runs for ten days and fosters an introductory
appreciation to theatrical interpretation, presence and
movement.
We have had a long history of encouraging young actors and those
interested in technical theater by awarding scholarships to
local high school and college students. Recent high school
recipients are Kaitlin Meleski for the Patty Moss Scholarship in
Acting and Fionna Cotton for the Angela Saunders Award for
Technical Theater. College recipients are Margaret Davies for
the Robert Sinclair Award for Acting and Jason Gonser for the
Richard Story Award for Technical Theater.
Although top hats are no longer seen marching down Main St, we
tip our hats to the longevity of this local theater group, the
joy a play brings to a cold January, the expectation we feel for
an upcoming summer musical and the sheer energy, time and love
of theater its many volunteers have given for 57 years. Geneseo
Community Players has enriched our community and our lives."

District. "The Geneseo School District presently
enrolls approximately 975 students in grades K-12. The District
encompasses 70 square miles. The school is housed in a
well-maintained, modern campus consisting of three adjoining
buildings and ample athletic facilities. The Elementary School
includes grades K-5. The Middle School/High School houses
grades 6-12. A beautiful new entryway and lobby were added in
2006 as part of a 9.9 million dollar renovation project. This
project also provided a new middle/high school office, upgraded
heating, ventilation and air conditioning, new lights, ceilings
and floors; as well as the reconstruction and modernization of
all of the high school science classrooms. The buildings and
grounds contain a beautiful 600-seat auditorium, a fitness
center, two gymnasiums, playing fields, a lighted stadium for
football and soccer, an all-weather track, and a competition
indoor pool.
The Geneseo Central School District has been a leader among the
Genesee Valley schools in the area of instructional technology.
Each classroom has networked computers for student use. There
are three computer labs in the school along with a state-of-art
computer-drafting classroom. The media centers also contain
enough computers to accommodate an entire class for student
research projects. The newly constructed science rooms have
wireless access points to connect a mobile cart of laptops that
are shared between the rooms for student use. There are five
Smartboards (interactive whiteboards) in the district with
continual use.
Along with a strong emphasis on the core subject areas, Geneseo
Central offers foreign language classes to students in grades
6-12. The ESL, music, and visual arts departments provide all
students with a strong background in the arts. The school
community of Geneseo Central emphasizes caring for the whole
child. The emotional and developmental growth of each child is
provided for by a support team that includes three school
counselors, a school psychologist, and a school social worker.
The connection and communication to school families is
highlighted by a supportive and active
Parent-Teacher-Student-Association (PTSA) and the involvement of

clubs.
